How to get to Southampton
Southampton has two major railway stations, called
Southampton Central and
Southampton Airport Parkway. South West Trains run
frequent services from London Waterloo (this is where the Eurostar trains
from Paris and Brussels arrive), serving both Southampton Airport and
Southampton Central, and there are some Virgin Cross Country trains which
also serve both stations. South Central Trains from London Victoria via
Gatwick and Wales & Borders Trains from Wales/Bristol and Portsmouth stop
at Southampton Central.
If you are staying in the Novotel, you should get off at Southampton Central.
The Nirvana Hotel is closer to Southampton Airport, while the other hotels
in the
accomodation list are about halfway between the two stations.
For more information on trains to Southampton see the
Railtrack online
timetable.
On arrival at Southampton Central, take the exit on the southern side
of the station, from platform 4. You will have to pass through a set
of gates to leave the station. If you want to claim your fare back, do not
insert your ticket into one of the automatic gates, as it will swallow
your ticket. Use the gate on the right hand side instead, and tell the
guard that you need to keep your ticket.
If you are staying in the Novotel, go straight ahead after leaving the
station (you can see the hotel from the station exit). If you are staying
in one of the other hotels, take a taxi (turn left after leaving the station).
Take the exit towards the Airport terminal building (on your left if you
come from London). Go to the airport arrivals lounge. On the right hand
side there is a taxi desk, where you can book a taxi to your hotel.
If you fly to the network meeting, it is likely that you arrive
either at one of the London airports, or at Southampton airport, which is
served by several domestic airlines as well as by flights from airports on
the continent, including Paris and Brussels.
More information about the airports in Southampton and
London can be found on the
BAA homepage.

London Heathrow
If you arrive at Heathrow, please send us
your flight number, arrival time, and terminal number
as soon as possible. We will try to organise your transport to Southampton.
Alernatively, you have four different options to get to Southampton.
- National Express. National Express Coaches (service 032)
connect Heathrow and Southampton. Coaches are usually booked out well in
advance, so you are strongly advised to pre-book your seats using the
booking form on gobycoach.com.
Please make sure you have plenty of time between arrival by plane and
the scheduled departure of your coach, as your flight may be delayed, and
you may have to walk for 10-15 minutes from the arrival gate to the baggage
reclaim area. From the arrivals lounge, follow the signs to the Central
Bus Station. The bus station is quite busy, slightly chaotic,
and characterised
by a complete lack of signs where to go when taking a National Express Coach.
Coaches to Southampton usually leave from stands 13 or 14. If you have to
pick up your tickets at the ticket office, please note that recently
one of us had to queue there for more than an hour. The journey time from
Heathrow to Southampton is about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- RailAir. There is a RailAir Coach service to Woking Railway
Station. On arrival at terminals 1, 3, or 4, go to the RailAir desk in the
arrivals lounge to buy your RailAir ticket. At terminal 2, you have to buy
your ticket from the driver (only UK cash accepted, no cards!). The bus
stops at all four terminals, and takes you to Woking in about 50 minutes,
twice per hour during daytime. From Woking, take a South West Train to
Southampton (several trains per hour, journey time 50-60 minutes).
- Via London using the underground. You can take the underground
(Victoria Line) to Victoria, from there take the Circle or
District Line (eastbound) to Westminster, and change to the Jubilee Line
to Waterloo. From Waterloo, there are South West Train Services to
Southampton (several trains per hour). The journey time from Waterloo to
Southampton is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Via London using the Heathrow Express. Take the Heathrow Express
Train Service from Heathrow to London Paddington. The journey time is about
15 minutes. From Paddington, take the underground (Circle Line, follow the
signs "Circle Line via Victoria") to Westminster, and
change to the Jubilee Line to Waterloo. Alternatively, take a taxi
from Paddington to Waterloo.
From Waterloo, there are South West Train Services to
Southampton (several trains per hour). The journey time from Waterloo to
Southampton is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
London Gatwick
If you arrive at Gatwick, please send us
your flight number, arrival time, and terminal number
as soon as possible. We will try to organise your transport to Southampton.
Alternatively,
there is a railway station connected to the airport. South Central Trains run
direct services to Southampton Central. The journey
time is approximately two hours. See the
Railtrack online

London Stansted
Take the Stansted Express train from the airport to London Liverpool Street.
This train runs every 15 minutes on weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm, and every
30 minutes otherwise. The journey time is 41 minutes. From Liverpool Street,
take the underground or a taxi to Waterloo. South West Trains provide
frequent services from Waterloo to Southampton (journey time approximately
