Southampton University School of Physics and Astronomy is hosting a day long event, highlighting some of the latest developments in Particle Physics research, and enabling physics students in their sixth form (and their teachers) to experience the excitement of research in this fundamental field. It provides the opportunity to relate A-level physics to fundamental research, and provides valuable access to practical experience and enthusiastic practitioners.

Programme

The following activities have been planned for the Masterclass

• "Light Fantastic" - a laser display and talk by Prof Nick Evans on Relativity and Quantum Mechanics
• "The Particle World" a talk by James French (a PhD student) about the sub-atomic world
• "Counting Quarks at LEP" - a computer lab session in which the students will study events from a major particle physics experiment to determine the number of quark colours.
• "The Large Hadron Collider and Beyond" - a talk by Prof Steve King on the current frontier of the field from the higgs boson to supersymmetry and the current LHC status.
