The aim of this work is to provide an explanation for the masses and mixings of the Standard Model fermionic content as well as for its supersymmetric extensions, using an S4xU(1) family symmetry in an SU(5) background. The results are given in terms of mass insertion parameters and are compared to experimental bounds form FCNC processes.
